There are currently378,500 children under the age of 18 living below the poverty line, of whichmore than twenty thousand are living in cubicles. These childrens families are facing financial difficultieswith prevalentfamily problems, such as violence, single parent etc. In the wake of the broadening social gap between rich and poor, over a thousand children have to work or even scavenge to help make ends meet. Without adequate resources or support from their families, it is difficult for these children to catch up with the pace and requirements of society, let alone getting out of poverty. Indeed, they need special support.

All children need balanced development in physical, mental, spiritual, social and other aspects of learning. We believe that children should be free from poverty and related family problems. We alsopromote equal opportunities for developmentso as towiden their horizons. It is absolutely imperativeto improve the quality of life of poor children as well astheirability to integrate into society.

House of Learning, a non-profit charitable institution, believes that action speaks louder than words. With the spirit ofcaring and nurturing the next generation, we raise the awareness of the public tothe physical and mental growth, as well as neuroeducation of children from low-income families. We will organize intelligence enrichment programme anda series of self-improvement programme to enhance their confidence and self-image while assisting their academics. Meanwhile, we will teachparents more effective discipline methods so as to provide them with a clearer idea on educating and supporting their childrenat home.

One Fire One Brain Project (Year Plan)

Project Aim and Service Target:

Serve low-income families from 3 primary schools or social institutions in 2011.

1. Boost the confidence and self-image of children from low-income family

2. Enhance their learning ability and achievement

3. Teach parents effective discipline method

Project structure:

It will cover 3 different areas of self improvement to enhance self learning ability and establish good values and characters. Educating parents is also the major focus of this project as they could be more in line with our education, and hence be more effective in educating children. The project comprises 3 parts:

1.      Parents talk/workshop

First of a series: “10A decoding talk”

The speaker Ivan Kwok, scholar of QueensCollege who obtained 10 As in the HKCEE examination, will share his experience of study. Kwok was born in a low-income family with a dream to help the disadvantaged. He has a great mother who often supports his academics by jogging with him. Kwok’s mother did not deliberately boost the study of Ivan. Instead of over-protecting and limiting her children, she always encourages them to try out things in which they are interested. The crux is to lead children become righteous person.

This talk would examine the major factors behind Ivan’s success – effective studying method, cultivating interest in study, high level of concentration, habit of proactive learning, influence from parents etc.

We will also invite other professionals to organize the following workshops on a regular basis:

* How to manage children’s behaviour effectively?

* Home can also be a wonderland of learning.

* Brain Enrichment and Accelerated Learning.

2.      Brain Enrichment Class

Why can’t students obtain satisfactory results despite their hard effort? In fact, the problem does not lie in the ability to learn, but rather the activation of intellectual potential of the brain. The human brain has great inherent power and potential. All the natural talents would emerge as long as the brain is running smoothly.

According to the “Nine Generic Skills Assessment” conducted by the Education and Manpower Bureau, primary students are weakest in the following 3 areas: critical thinking, communication skills and creative thinking. Thus, we design this programme not only to enhance their neurolearning skills, but also improve the three targeted skills.

We will insert some “Open Brain Exercise” at the beginning of each chapter to prepare the brain for more concentrated, flexible and accelerated learning. Examples include Brain Gym, hand-eye coordination exercise, Brain dance etc. Each chapter will also use some foreign textbooks originally for the training of gifted children to reinforce children’s brains while enhancing their English proficiency.

A graduation ceremony will be organized at the end of each course. This will enhance children’s confidence by showing their achievements to the public.

Chapter I: Initiate Creative Thinking

Everyone has creativity, yet the difference among individuals lies in whether it is inspired. It is critical to train the creativity of children from childhood, since their brains needs spaces to let them create and think unboundedly. This chapter will continuously encourage children to unleash their creativity which will hugely benefit their intelligent and emotional development. The children will be more flexible and capable in their academics. They will also have higher confidence and be ready to face future challenges.

Chapter II: Critical Thinking

Every child has immense curiosity and willingness to learn since inborn. Meanwhile, critical thinking skill is essential in most learning process. If a child could master the skill of thinking, they will be more successful in their academics and their future. It is indispensable to cultivate children’s critical-thinking learning mode for day-to-day studies and handling of daily problems. These abilities should be trained since childhood. In this chapter, we will train children to think independently, ask more questions, proactively search for answers, express personal opinions, discuss personal views with others, find the crux of events after discussion and make decision after understanding main points. With such training, they will learn to consider different aspects when solving problems.

Chapter III: Develop Problem Solving Skills

Children will understand the immense power of human brain in this chapter. They will understand that there is always more than one solution when solving problems. They will be encouraged to solve a problem with different approaches, enhancing their problem solving skills and cultivate multi-perspective thinking.

Period: 3 months in total

(Four lessons per chapter, One lesson per week, 2 hours per lesson)

3.      Organize large-scale SuperLearning Day Camp

Organize a three-day learning camp during school holidays. We will organize workshops and different activities to develop and enhance children’s:

                                      Presentation skills

                                      Social skills

Etiquettes of getting along with people

                                      Emotion expression

Past achievement:

We had organized the same project for 150 children from low-income families under Society for Community Organization (SoCo) from 2007 to 2010. We utilized a self-improvement scheme to boost their confidence and self-image. We provided a series of academic training to aid the children’s studies. Also, we taught parents effective discipline skills so that they have a clearer concept to educate and support their children at home. Here are some of the feedbacks from the participants:

Feedback from Parents

“My two daughters enjoyed the Brain Enrichment Class where they learned English through games. They have improvements in their academics, and they really like this mode of learning.”

“My child changed a lot after the Brain Enrichment Class. He has greater ability of expression and faster responses. He really loves this mode of education.”

“My son has all-rounded improvement, especially in English and diet. Now he gets more than 90 marks in English dictation. It is really a substantial improvement”

“All my three daughters enrolled in the Brain Enrichment Class. This class helped them greatly. They can complete their English assignments more quickly. Once they even scored full marks together in their English dictations!”

“Ever since participating in the Brain Enrichment Class, my child has great improvement in his academics. He loves having lessons.”

Feedback from Children

“I learnt not to use the brain indiscriminately. I have to cooperate with others and always express my gratitude to others.”

“I learnt Team Work and Never Give Up.”

“I learnt to cooperate with others. I felt happy and interested!”

“I learnt a lot (of skills)......One (of the skills) is cooperation, with which things could be done effectively and efficiently”
